A Day in the Life of a Social Media Manager: From Coffee to Crisis

If you’re a social media agency, just try to run an ad for hiring a social media manager once and the number of responses you get is gonna boggle your mind. Indeed, because social media is so widespread, everyone thinks they can master the art and have what it takes to be one. NOT REALLY.

And if you also feel offended after reading this, riddle us this, “What would you do for Nike, Dolce, and Fenty Beauty if you were a social media manager for an agency with these clients for one day?” Tough call, in fact lots of calls per day!

Yes, a day in the life of a social media manager is a lot more than what seems to be on the surface.

  1. Starting off the day with going through social media pages of a random bunch of clients from all possible sectors and asking yourself, “what’s up?”. Jokes apart, this is one of the most stimulating activities to start the day off with. The stimuli being the randomness and trends from all sectors in your brain pulling you in different directions (breathes deeply and chants “one trend at a time”).
  2. And when the stimuli gets too much, what do we do? Get an Americano! With that one shot of espresso and ice cubes serving to our cravings, we move ahead to the sheets. Google workspace is our second best friend. First one still remains disapproving of designers’ color choices (smirks). Back to the sheets, a social media manager has to effectively represent their ideas with relevant references and creative copies for the rest of the team to start their work! Best social media agencies highly approve of well-maintained sheets. Managerial skills are a must, you know! And when you do make the sheet with the trends in-built, make sure they are of high social media strategy value.
  3. Social media and digital branding experts have to make sure everything is in accord with the brand guide. So once the sheets are made and designers are brains deep in Adobe photoshop or Premiere Pro, make sure you disturb them, and remind them to follow strict brand guidelines, correct logo placements and fonts!
  4. Then comes the difficult task. It’s 1145 hours and brand owners are now awake and all set to check their social media pages, responsive web designs, and linkedin management. And the calls roll in! Like we said in the beginning, social media management is a fancy job that includes a lot of aspects from strategy building to client servicing.
  5. UGC, or user-generated content, is trending and gets a great engagement, and our clients know that as much as we do. So our next task on the list is to save every reel that we come across as doable and beneficial for our clients. A social media manager’s user-generated content strategy has to be top-notch because these are the videos that are also used in UGC performance marketing, and who does it better than someone who scrolls Instagram all day long? Authentic content creation also comes with the job sometimes, you know?
  6. Evenings come with a crisis; almost every day. Frantic calls, chaotic offices. This is the time when lots of deliverables are pending, the team is already in the party mood and the clients are coming up with changes! On top of that, everyone is concerned about their postings, because isn’t 6 PM the best time to post on Instagram?

With all the crises and coffees included, it definitely stands as a job people have admired a lot in recent years. With social media’s ever evolving nature and the adrenaline in finding just the apt trend for a client, a day in the life of a social media manager becomes a year!
